I first met Dave over 15 years ago when I had a young horse, Stutz. I was told that Stutz was dangerous and unbreakable. Stutz had a problem. He thought when someone mounted him that it was a cougar or monster. He would check out mentally and would try to remove whoever was on his back as quick as possible. He would become so frightened that he was not only a danger to the rider but to himself.

I sent Stutz to Dave without any expectations. If this didn't work, Stutz would become a pasture ornament. Dave spent the next 10 days doing ground work and would lay Stutz down. He never forced him down but made it Stutz's choice. Once down, Dave would approach him slowly and start rubbing on him. It didn't take long for Stutz to start trusting Dave and actually relax while Dave rubbed on him. Dave could sit on him while he was down. Dave could rub him all over, walk away and Stutz would have eyes closed and relaxed. Laying Stutz down helped him to face his fears and to trust in people.

The first time that Stutz relaxed while laying down, I got a phone call. "Karin, I think he's going to make it." That was the beginning of Stutz having confidence. Dave rode him soon after and had me on him within the week. Unknowinly I arrived with tennis shoes on not knowing that I would get the opportunity to get on. He gave me tools to help Stutz get his confidence back when he became unsure. Slowly Stutz could fill in for me. He would be there for me when we would approach a new jump or on a trail ride.

Over the years Dave has started many youngsters for me. Dave is one of the reasons that my horses are known for having such good brains. Dave helped them get a good foundation under saddle. I hope I learned something to. I used the tools he gave me to raise my youngsters for a solid future.

I highly recommend Dave. No matter what discipline you ride Dave's knowledge can help you approach your horse with new understanding. You can contact Dave to ride in one of his clinics or send your horse to Shadysprings for a month or two. I call it Dave's magic.

Many people are into "Natural Horsemanship" these days. Dave has ridden with the founders of this movement before it was called that.

Dave spent time with Tom Dorrance, Ray Hunt, Joe Wolter and Bryan Neubert, to name a few. These great horseman approached horses in a new way. They approached a horse so it became a partner "synergy, if you will". Each contribute part but the sum is always greater then the parts added together.

Dave is still a student of the horse.
