The Different Types Of Footings Used
We applied 3/4" minus gravel packed into dirt then added 4" of sand. The gravel has mixed in with the sand some but we have not had any horse injuries from it. The cost was 31 cents per foot.
6" cedar woodchips over 1 1/2" minus gravel. The wood chips broke down after around 6 weeks. Were currently adding another 6".. This area cost 40 cents per square foot.
This is our old sand arena with very poor drainage. We periodically add fill sand in the summer and it has held up very well We also put a smaller paddock in that is sand only but with good drainage. This is the least expensive at 15 cents per square foot.
This area had woven geotextile fabric with 4" of 3/4" minus gravel on top and then a 4" layer of sand. This will not have the impact that the baby turn-out area will have.. It came to 48 cents per foot. A deeper base of gravel was used for the baby area and came to 54 cents per square foot.
